National Black Caucus of the Green Party Opposes UN Resolution to Invade Haiti
The resolution, which was adopted on October 2nd, 2023 authorizes the deployment of a multinational security force to Haiti to help address the country's security crisis. The resolution was passed with the support of 13 of the 15 members of the Security Council, including the United States.
The NBC strongly opposes this resolution, which we believe is a violation of Haiti's sovereignty and a recipe for disaster. Haiti has a long history of foreign intervention, which has often only served to make the country's problems worse. “We believe that the UN resolution is simply the latest attempt by the United States and other foreign powers to impose their will on the Haitian people.” states NBC co-chair, Darryl! Moch.
A recent Black Agenda Report's article argues that deploying the Kenyan police would be a form of neocolonialism, as it would be imposing foreign forces on Haiti without the consent of the Haitian people. These concerns about the deployment of the Kenyan police to Haiti are also shared by NBC co-chair, Philena Farley, “US foreign policy process is like, ‘let’s sanction the hell out of a country, cause turmoil and then cry foul to the UN! Classic move.”
Sanctions are a form of collective punishment that disproportionately harms the poorest and most vulnerable Haitians. The Green Party's stance on sanctions against Haiti is consistent with its broader opposition to war and violence. Sanctions are a form of war. They are directed against the people from countries that will not follow the dictates of the US. The goal is to make the lives of the people in these countries intolerable so they will oppose their governments and support the US regime-change agendas in their countries.
The NBC stands in solidarity with the Haitian people and we will continue to fight for their right to self-determination.
